Dunedin Landscaping grew from lifestyle block work. Before expanding into residential landscaping and property maintenance, the business was built on helping lifestyle block and small rural property owners manage their land. We continue to offer these services, and Tony's background as a former farmer and lifestyle block owner means he has first-hand understanding of the work involved.
Too big for hand tools, too small for an ag contractor
Many lifestyle block owners face a common problem. The work that needs doing on their property — clearing overgrown vegetation, maintaining tracks, sorting out drainage, tidying up fence lines — is too large to do by hand with domestic tools, but too small to justify the cost of bringing in an agricultural contractor or full-scale earthmoving operation. The equipment is too big, the minimum charges are too high, and it can be difficult to get a contractor interested in a job of that scale.
We fill this gap. Our 2-tonne digger, flail mower and mulcher, and tipper truck are sized for lifestyle block work. They are large enough to handle the jobs that need doing, but they are not oversized for the sites they work on. We also have access to larger diggers should the job warrant it. The result is that lifestyle block owners get the work done properly, with the right equipment, at a reasonable cost.
Flail mowing, mulching and heavier clearing
Overgrown vegetation is one of the most common issues on lifestyle blocks. Grass, scrub, gorse, and broom can take over quickly — particularly on blocks where the owner lives off-site or does not have the equipment to keep on top of it. Left unchecked, vegetation growth creates problems: it harbours pests, increases fire risk, encroaches on usable land, and makes other maintenance work more difficult.
Our flail mower and mulcher makes short work of overgrown vegetation, cutting and mulching it in a single pass. For heavier clearing — established gorse, dense scrub, or regrowth around fence lines and tracks — the digger with the grab bucket strips and stacks the material for removal or burning. We cart away cleared vegetation with the tipper truck and can arrange disposal.
Regular management is more cost-effective than periodic major clear-ups. If your block tends to get ahead of you, a scheduled annual or twice-yearly mow and clear keeps the vegetation under control and avoids the expense of a large-scale clearing job.
Tracks, drainage and site work without the damage
Earthmoving on lifestyle blocks covers a range of work that differs from typical residential excavation. Common jobs include maintaining and repairing access tracks, clearing and regrading drainage channels, opening up or improving stock access, clearing fence lines ahead of fence maintenance, and general site levelling for sheds, storage areas, or yards.
The 2-tonne digger handles most of this work well. It can access areas of a block that larger machines cannot reach without causing significant damage to tracks and pasture, and its rock, tilt, and grab buckets cover the range of tasks typically encountered. Spoil and cleared material can be carted away by our tipper truck or redistributed on-site as needed.
